Many youth in this North Vancouver community honour the sound of the drum beat, and some students of aboriginal ancestry do not have financial means to even build their own instrument.  The process of constructing a drum requires great patience and time, which provides a wonderful learning opportunity for students with the “take-away” of having their own drum.

Norgate Community Elementary-X’wemelch’stn has applied to The Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund Adopt-a-School program for an $8,000 grant to co-design artwork/identity for water bottles and to build drums with a Squamish Nation elder.
