2020 Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation: Food4Schools

Food4Schools  $25,000

Food4Schools has established a food depot where we are able source in-kind food donations, bulk purchase, sort and deliver weekly food hampers to 28 schools across our District. Food is provided free of charge to schools for their school meals programs including breakfast, lunch and snack programs for vulnerable students.

Once weekly, schools place a grocery order with Food4Schools to support their school meals programs including breakfast, lunch and snacks for vulnerable students. We work closely with our local food banks’ food recovery program to access as much donated food as possible and supplement with bulk and case lot purchases. We also work with local grocers and food distributors to get best pricing on behalf of all District schools.

Food is sorted at the depot into hampers and delivered once per week to each school. Food is used to create breakfast smoothies, grab and go snacks, sit down meals, hot breakfast and lunch and our goal is to be able to provide hampers to take home for some of our students with the highest needs. With COVID restrictions, we are able to support schools with limited resources to make meals. By working across the District, we are able to provide food items to high school programs that in turn make baked items or soups etc. for feeder schools and we deliver. Every student in need, regardless of their school, will receive support with food at school.
